If you would have told me five years ago that Thom Yorke and Flea would one day form a band together I would have told you that you were bat shit crazy. Here we are in 2010 and I am pleased as punch that this is actually happening. That’s right, pleased as punch. I’m hardly ever pleased as punch. Anyhow, all punch aside, this is a very exciting prospect. Radiohead and The Red Hot Chili Peppers all mixed up in a big bowl of harmonious funk is very exciting indeed.
The prospect would be exciting enough if it were just Yorke and Flea, but that’s not all! Throw in long-time Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich on guitar and keyboards, a fantastic studio drummer for the likes of Beck, Elliott Smith, and The Smashing Pumpkins, and David Byrne’s percussionist. That’s Right! David Byrne’s percussionist! That’s a hell of a lineup. The band has been touring with a set list consisting mostly of Thom Yorke’s solo album The Eraser, and a couple of original songs.
The first song Yorke dubbed as an original Atoms For Peace song is Judge, Jury, and Executioner. The Mellotron heavy feel of this tune makes me think that the band is continuing in The Eraser’s direction. I really liked The Eraser’s desolate, eerie backdrop so I am very much looking forward to hearing the upcoming disc.
Like I said, expect an electronic, Eraser like funk from these boys. Expect a lot of doom-laden lyrics. Expect mostly pessimistic overtones and expect that to be a good thing.
